A two-day introduction to relief carving in limestone with sculptor Philip Potter — coming to The Three Cups, Malmesbury.
There is nothing quite like the first hour with a mallet and chisel — the rhythm of it, the surprise of what stone will give you. Over two days you’ll learn the fundamentals of relief carving in English limestone and leave with a finished carving of your own, made entirely by your hands.
No experience is needed. All tools, materials and tuition are provided. You bring curiosity; the stone does the rest.
Your tutor
Philip Potter has been carving stone for over twenty-five years, trained through the Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust, and holds an MA in Fine Art (Distinction). He taught experiential craft-based learning at the Glasshouse College (Ruskin Mill Trust) for many years and is a qualified adult educator. His sculpture has been exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and the Ruskin Glass Centre.
